SONG: Southern Ohio Neighbors Group

SONG is an association of residents and communities from across southern Ohio, including northern Kentucky and northwest West Virgina. SONG has formed in opposition to the plan to import, store and reprocess commercial spent nuclear fuel at the Department of Energy reservation in Pike County. SONG seeks the restoration of cleanup funding for the site, the formation of an inclusive stakeholders group to decide on the site's future, and redevelopment of the site for archaeological and environmental restoration and environmentally responsible industries.

SHIPP: Sargents Historic Preservation Project

SHIPP is an association of current owners of historic properties in Sargents and those with indigenous claims to the land. SHIPP seeks to establish a Historic District in Sargents, which would uniquely span the time from paleo and archaic Indian settlements, through the period of the spactular earthworks of the Scioto Civilization, to historic nineteenth century homes and the modern constructions of the Atomic Age. Among the important sites of Sargents are the circle-square complex of the Barnes Works; the Alembic Earthwork; the Barnes, Sargent and Rittenour homes; the old Barnes Graveyard; the Sargents Railway Station; and the site of the slaying of the last passenger pigeon ever sighted in the wild.

SHIPP also works to memorialize the Passenger Pigeon, an extinct species that was sacred and central to the Indian cultures that inhabited the valley, and to protect and honor those endangered sacred species that survive in the area: the Panther, the Bobcat and the Timber Rattlesnake.
